What to do.....

What do I want to do with my life. Isn't that a question that should have been answered years ago? Probably but, now I get to figure it out again. There just aren't that many jobs out there for Secretary/administrative assistants/everything else I did at my old job....but, I don't really want to do that again. I guess that's cause I was treated so badly for YEARS at my old job and I'm just afraid of getting into something like that again. Plus I feel like I'm such a creative and imaginative person but, how do you put that into a job. I love to do photography but, how do I make that into a job? I'd love to do something like sell my pictures on line or something like that but, that wouldn't bring in the money I would need to survive. So I'm stuck...and unhappy and most days...all day I just feel like crying.

Then I start to think of things I want to do in a few weeks...in a few months and I get worried that if I have a job and I ask for time off with no real vacation time that they would fire me..... *sigh*

Oh Well....

I did do some stitching on Mirabilia's Halloween Fairy the other day but, I ended up having to frog out most of what I did cuase the last time I worked on the piece a year or so ago I had put the wrong floss on the needled so when I picked it up I had no idea and just started stitching away. Hopefully I'll have somthing more to show next time.

Love the blog look!

You'll find what it is you're looking for. And as for vacation, if you had something you'd tell the future employer during the interview and have that on the table. I wouldn't worry about it unless it was the dream job and they seemed so strict that seriously if they were that strict would you want to work for them!? Hang in there!

Ah, the golden question. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my life. Like you, I'm creative and would love to make money doing something artistic, but sadly it's extremely difficult to make a living that way. Of course, you could go to school for graphic design or computer animation, or advertising and then get a job in a creative field that would support you well. But of course, that's years of school, and you may or may not want to do that. After struggling with myself for years, I think I've come to the conclusion that its more practical to get a job that pays the bills and then do something creative on the side either for extra money or just for your own creative expression.

Ah, Jenn, I understand your feelings. With only one child left homeschooling and a near future with three kids in college at once, I'm thinking it might be a good idea for me to consider the job market again. A place I haven't ventured into for 27 years! My skill set is similar to yours, executive secretary before babies, and I have concerns for flexibility too. I don't think I'll need to work full time, but most part time positions aren't as flexible as I want. Plus I'm sure I'll need classes of some kind to bring me up to speed technically.

So I guess the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" must be considered many times during one's life.

Good luck with your search!

What about web design? Do you know HTML and could you do web work...maybe do that on the side of a regular job? That's why I started my finishing business, because I really just liked to do it. I'm really lucky in that my career is exactly what I should be doing....I hope that you find something that you want to do too! Something that you'll be happy in.

Hang in there :)

I am still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up! It sure does help to do something that you enjoy, because then it does not seem like work.

I wouldn't hold back on making plans. If you have something planned and have a serious offer on the table, just let them know up front what you have going on. I'm sure that most reasonable employers would accommodate that!

Sometimes life gets so confusing. Hang in there. You'll figure things out in time.

Fingers crossed the answer comes to you - deciding what to do about jobs that are less than perfect are always really scary, especially now in this financial crisis, but unhappiness at work brings so much stress/depression home with you, it could be worth taking the risk. Hopefully something will come to mind soon so you can get that life/work balance right :)

Hi Jenn, you know, I am just so blown away that you posted on this, and that I found it today, because last night, I had this "vision"? "idea"? with you in it.
You were working as a nurse.
